I am a 41 year old female. I live in New York city and I have a hard time wearing open toe shoes in the summer because I have a reoccurring problem with in-grown toenails. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
Ingrown toe nails can be cause by shoe gear. Open toe shoes can actually help the symtpoms because the shoe is not pressing on the area. Some people have a misshapen portion of the nail that grows deep into the skin. I advise my patients with this problem (medical term is Onychodystrophy) to keep the nail cut short and even. When this fails, an office procedure can be performed to permanently remove the portion of the nail that grows abnormally, and this is called matrixectomy.
