I am a 52 year old female living in Manhattan. Bunions run in my family and I am now suffering from this issue. If the pain in my feet continue to get worse I know that I will need to have surgery but is surgery the only option for bunions?
Bunion surgery is indeed an option for painful bunions, but there are a variety of thing you can to try prior to surgery. Most of the treatments, however, are centered around addressing the symptoms. Padding the bunion region is simple method to offer some relief. Pain medication can also help. I recommend limiting time in shoes that press on the bunion region, or have the shoe spot stretched. Bunion splints and toe spacers are aimed at preventing worsening but requires dedicated use. Some bunions get worse regardless what you try, and that may simply be due to genetics.
