I love to run and participate in marathons when time allows. I am an overall healthy 27-year-old female. However, I have a bunion that seems to be getting larger and painful. I reside in New York City. If I have my bunion removed surgically will it return?
Bunion recurrence after surgery is a possibility, but often depends on the technique used to correct the bunion. In our Manhattan bunion surgery practice, each bunion is unique and the procedure that best fits your foot (lifestyle, activity level and expectations) is considered. Bunions are generally fixed based on the size of the bunion – smaller bunions are treated with a special bone cut near the big toe joint and larger bunions are treated with a bone mending procedure that realigns the deviated bone. In my experience, recurrence tends to occur when larger bunions are treated with the procedure to treat small bunions. Another possibility for recurrence is in those who have excessive motion in the arch of the foot that cause the bones to wiggle more.
